Flexible Sigmoidoscopy lets your Gastroenterologist examine the lining of the rectum and the lower portion of the colon (large intestine) by inserting a flexible tube into the anus and slowly advancing it into the rectum and lower part of the colon. You may be sedated to help you relax and better tolerate any discomfort. You will lie on your left side or back while your doctor slowly advances the sigmoidoscope. This test may be done to evaluate problems in your rectum or lower colon. You may have already had a recent colonoscopy but have remaining issues such as inflammation in the lower colon or rectum, hemorrhoids, or lower colon narrowing. This procedure takes 15-20 minutes with 30-60 minutes additional recovery time. You will need a driver if you have sedation.
